Car Damaged in a Flood? A Step-by-Step Claim Guide for Assam

Every monsoon, cars and bikes across Assam are caught in floods and waterlogging. What you do in the first few hours decides how much of the repair your insurer pays.

1First: Don't Start the Engine

If water has reached the engine, do not crank or start it. Water sucked into the engine can bend internal parts — a repairable car becomes a seized engine. Insurers often treat damage caused by starting a flooded engine as consequential damage and refuse it.

2Is Flood Damage Covered?

Yes! Comprehensive motor insurance covers flood damage under "Natural Calamities." Given Assam's flood-prone geography, we always recommend Comprehensive insurance with an Engine Protect add-on. This covers engine damage from water ingression — a very common issue in Assam's rainy season.

  • Third-Party only: pays nothing for your own vehicle.
  • Comprehensive: pays for flood damage to your vehicle.
  • Engine Protect add-on: needed for engine damage from water.

3How to Make the Claim

  • Take photos and a video of the vehicle, the water level and the surroundings — before anything is moved.
  • Inform the insurer as soon as possible — call us and we register the claim with you.
  • Tow, don't drive the vehicle to a cashless network garage. We help you find one.
  • Surveyor inspection — the insurer's surveyor checks the damage and approves the estimate.
  • Repair and settlement — in a cashless claim the insurer pays the garage directly; you pay only the non-covered part.

4Documents You Will Need

  • Insurance policy copy
  • RC (Registration Certificate)
  • Valid driving licence copy
  • Duly filled claim form (we help you fill this)
  • Repair estimate from garage
  • Accident photos / video

5What Insurers Usually Don't Pay

  • Depreciation on parts — unless you have Zero Depreciation cover.
  • Engine damage from water — unless you have the Engine Protect add-on.
  • Consumables like engine oil, nuts and bolts — unless you have Consumables cover.
  • Anything if the policy had lapsed on the day of the flood.

6Get Ready Before the Next Monsoon

  • Renew with Comprehensive cover + Engine Protect + Zero Depreciation.
  • Keep photos of your RC and policy on your phone.
  • Park on higher ground when heavy rain is forecast.
