How to Choose Health Insurance in Assam: 8 Things to Check

Two plans with the same premium can pay very differently at claim time. Check these 8 things before you buy — or let us check them for you.

1Enough Sum Insured

As a general guideline for Guwahati:

  • Individual (young): ₹10 Lakhs minimum
  • Family of 4: ₹10–15 Lakhs
  • Family with senior parents: ₹15–25 Lakhs

Medical costs in Assam have risen significantly. A major surgery can cost ₹3–8 Lakhs in Guwahati.

2Cashless Hospitals Near You — and Where You May Travel

Check that the plan's network includes hospitals in your town and the big hospitals in Guwahati and Dibrugarh you may be referred to. Many patients from Assam and the Northeast also travel to Chennai, Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai or Bangalore for specialised treatment — choose a plan with a wide cashless network across India. Networks differ by insurer and change over time — we check the current list for you, and guide you through the claim wherever you are treated.

3Waiting Periods

  • Initial waiting period — usually the first 30 days, except accidents.
  • Pre-existing diseases — covered after a waiting period, often 2–4 years depending on the plan.
  • Maternity — after a waiting period of 12–24 months, in plans that include it.

The earlier you buy, the sooner these periods are over.

4Room Rent Limits

Some plans cap the room rent per day. If you pick a bigger room, the insurer may cut all related bills proportionately — not just the room. Prefer plans with no room rent cap or a single private room.

5Co-Payment

A co-payment means you pay a fixed share of every claim (for example 10–20%). It is common in senior citizen plans. Know it before you buy — a lower premium sometimes hides a high co-pay.

6Restore / Recharge Benefit

If one hospitalisation uses up the sum insured, a restore benefit refills it for the next illness in the same year — very useful in a family floater.

7Pre & Post Hospitalisation

Tests and medicines before admission and follow-ups after discharge are covered for a set number of days — check how many. Good plans cover 90 days before and 180 days after discharge.

8Declare Everything Honestly

Tell the insurer about existing illnesses, medicines and habits like smoking. Non-disclosure is the most common reason claims are rejected — an honest declaration protects your claim.

Government schemes like Ayushman Bharat and Atal Amrit Abhiyan are useful, but they have income limits and narrower cover — a private plan fills the gaps. See our FAQ.
